Pulverizing units
Temperature measurement
In a coal-fired power plant, the pulverizing units are used to crush coal into a fine powder that is blown into the boiler firebox and ignited. Pieces of coal are crushed between balls or cylindrical rollers that move between two tracks or ”races”. The raw coal is then fed into the pulverizing unit along with air heated to approx. 650°F from the boiler. Monitoring of temperature levels in the pulverizing process is important to maintain a safe, steady process.
A solution for this application is to install TC temperature sensors at multiple points in the pulverizing units all connected to a number of PR 3113 HART 7 temperature converters. The two-wire style outputs from the 3113 are all connected to active PLC inputs with a HART-based control system. The isolated temperature converter linearizes the TC signal, eliminates ground loops, and provides a robust signal due to excellent EMC design.
